Tai Chi Seniors |
During the mid 1990s, Buddha Zhen taught Youth and Senior Programs at the YWCA in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2004, Buddha Zhen relaunched his Senior Tai Chi Program at his local Tujunga, YMCA. "I've made only one change in the Tai Chi Form to make it easier for the seniors," explains Buddha Zhen. "I only altered the Crane Stances with one leg high to be Heel Stances with the heel of the foot barely touching the floor. Other than that, the kids, the seniors, and the adults all get the same Yang Style Tai Chi Form. Listed in the |

Chinese Classical Weaponry |
I started importing weapons while I was in Utah. The Karate stores could order a few of our clothes and weapons through their martial arts distributors -- but I needed a better selection. In Utah I rarely sold wepons outside of my classes. I didn't mind making a few spears and swords each semester. Then i moved back to California. For the past half dozen years I was having to carve a couple spears and build a couple swords each week... I didn't have the time and my profit margin was minimal. Even my prices still reflected my desire to give my students a good deal. After 911, when postage prices increased, I was charging more for postage than the price of the weapon... some people were complaining. So I stopped my custom weapon building. Ah. Now I just have to make a couple per semester for my own students again. I still import for my students, and if you want a sword or weapon, I'll be glad to help you. I haven't raised my prices much so be warned, the postage will cost more than you expect on long weapons like staffs and spears... |

Annual Chinese Gongfu & Taijiquan Tournament |
Our goal is to provide a tournament in which Kung Fu stylists can compete with Kung Fu judges with events that don't take place in Karate tournaments, such as Push Hands competitions. Kung Fu styles are subdivided into Northern styles and Southern Styles, with weapon competitions mixing all styles. Tai Chi has its own divisions with Push Hands competitions and a special applications divisiion. Although we could include Lion Dancing, we realized that throwing a small tournament in Utah was an all-day event with the categories we started with.

SCM Summer Push Hands Tournament |
Each summer in Liberty Park, we held our SCM Summer Push Hands Tournament. When we established the Tai Chi Youth nonprofit organization, we were able to get better discounts on Park rentals, insurance, and had donors who made this a really fun event. The winners of this tournament are "seeded" (ranked) for the upcoming California Push Hands Championship.

Bodhidharma = Patron Saint |
Bodhidharma was the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism in India. He walked from India to China. He met the Emperor of China. He retired at the Shaolin Monastery on Mt. Songshan. He invented Kung Fu and Zen-style Buddhism. He lived alone in a cave for seven years writing books. He accomplished much more than he probably intended. |

Tai Chi Youth nonprofit education organization |
Shaolin Chi Mantis launched Kids programs during the early 1990s. In 1994 Shaolin Chi Mantis donated scholarships to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organizations for classes held at the YWCA in Salt Lake City. This program became so successful that Buddha Zhen changed his mind from forming a Buddhist Church named, Shaolin Zen, to the nondenominational education organization, Tai Chi Youth. Tai Chi Youth is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
